With 2021 winding down, I thought it would be worthwhile to revisit the top 2021 resolutions:
50% of Americans wanted to do more exercise or improve their fitness.
47% of Americans wanted to lose weight.
44% of Americans wanted to save more money.
39% of Americans wanted to improve their diet.
And despite good intentions, in previous years, only 16% stuck to some of their resolutions.
Health and wealth are intertwined. The healthier you are, the fewer medical visits you typically need and less medication in the long run. And by cooking at home not only do you save money, you know what you are putting into your body which supports weight loss, fitness and improving diet.
Here are some eye-opening stats to think about:
200 years ago, the average American consumed only 2lbs of sugar a year. In 1970 we ate 123lbs of sugar a year. Today, the average American consumes 152lbs of sugar in just one year!
Americans are eating more ultra-processed food than ever, with 57% of their diets coming from prepackaged foods which are loaded with saturated fats, sodium, and sugar. A chicken burrito at your favorite QSR will set you back 1,110+ calories, 53 grams of fat, and 2,550+ mg of sodium. And that is WITHOUT CHEESE, the free chips, or a soda.
50% of Americans who join a gym to support their resolutions quit the gym within six months!
The obesity rate has increased by 26% since 2008, with 42% of Americans now obese.
16 states now have an obesity rate of 35% or higher, 2X the number of states since 2018!
50%+ of adults aged 18 - 25 are now obese or overweight, according to Johns Hopkins research published in JAMA. From 1976 to 1980, the average BMI for this age group was 23.1, and today, the average BMI is 27.7!
More than half of the lost weight was regained within two years, and by five years, more than 80% of lost weight was regained.
I am an anomaly. I am going on four years of losing nearly 40lbs despite being put through the wringer of my hair cut off, fat injected into me, fat sucked out of my face, bones rotated, isolated, divorce, being broke, job loss, moved four times and through it all, I never stopped training. I coached myself to a top 45% of my first triathlon ever, a 70.3-mile race called 70.3 Ironman. The experience has been so transformational that I am now a certified Ironman Coach to help others get across that finish line. And you don't have to be a great swimmer to do an Ironman. You just need to be fast enough to make the cutoff time. That's it—lots of unconventional techniques and approaches to get through that open water swim, so please Do NOT let the swim prevent you from participating!
Like so many others, I, too, was a victim once to the fad diets and bad information on social media, and I paid a dear price for it with my health as a result. The weight loss and weight management diet market was valued at $192.2 billion in 2019 and is projected to reach $295.3 billion by 2027. Keto alone is worth nearly $10 Billion Dollars.
My own experience(s) have left me so disgusted that I am now a Certified Nutrition Coach to support others in their weight loss journey with an evidence-based approach to nutrition for sustainable weight loss. I don't want to see anyone go down the hard path I had to take. While your health may not be a pressing issue now, you have no idea what the future holds for you.
What makes me different? I have real results with the stats to prove it despite the extreme adversity I have been put through now for over two years. In 2021 alone, I have cycled nearly 6,000 miles, run 1,830+ miles, and swum 184+ miles without a single group ride, run or swim team. At the start of COVID in March of 2020, I weighed in at 148.8lbs. Today, I weigh in at 133lbs despite fat injected into me, wearing size 26 jeans and size 4/6 in Lululemon.
I am not promising you a 50lbs weight loss in six months. What I will do is guide you on how to make health a lifestyle with sustainable results. I will educate you on how minor changes add up to big results. And along the way, if you are interested, I will coach you on how to hate running just a little less. And most important of all, I will coach you on your mindset. We will overcome whatever barriers stand in your way to your best healthy self. And I will save you a lot of money along the way from stuff you don't need. I don't sell supplements, protein shakes, cookbooks, tummy tamers, or anything else. I hate KETO and love carbs. I proudly support our farmers and a movement for real food vs. food product. Not only does real food work for sustainable weight loss, but it may also be the greenest thing we can do for our environment.
P.S. I will be a National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certified Personal Trainer before the end of 2021, in addition to my Ironman Coaching Certification and NASM Nutrition Certification.
Are you ready to do this?
Did you know that being overweight or having obesity increases your risk of getting cancer? You may be surprised to learn that being overweight or having obesity is linked with a higher risk of getting 13 types of cancer.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention these cancers make up 40% of all cancers diagnosed in the United States each year. And this is based on evidence-based science.
A recent study showed how fitter individuals scored higher on the cognitive tests and also had higher levels of white matter in the brain—which is your brain’s connection system, responsible for transmission of nerve signals.
Regular exercise is linked to lower risk of heart disease, cancer and dementia
Research now clearly shows exercise is as effective if not more effective than antidepressants
In 2018, I unexpectedly left my job at Cox Enterprises due to a physical illness that extended beyond FLMA after taking preventative steps to ward off cancer, including a double mastectomy with reconstruction. Since being away from corporate, I have used the time for a proper self-growth sabbatical as well as getting my health in order.
In addition to earning several professional certifications including my Project Management and Business Analysis certifications, Google Fundamentals of Digital Marketing, Risk Management and Introduction to AI from IBM, I developed my own brand and website, #goatmatters.
I have lost and sustained a nearly 40lb weight loss by overhauling my eating habits and cooking
about 90% of all my meals from minimally processed ingredients and exercise.
I trained and finished my first full marathon
Earned my open water scuba diving certification
Transitioned from exclusive treadmill running to an almost exclusive outdoor runner.
And in 2020, I set out to knock out a big bucket list item: An Ironman traithlon. ! I started at ground zero with cycling and swimming. I couldn't afford a coach so I coached myself to my first 70.3 Half Ironman, my first ever triathlon, with a finish time of 6:24, placing me in the top 45% of all women regardless of age. I went from sucking wind swimming 50M to an open water swim time of 36 minutes for 1.2 miles against the odds stacked high against me.
The experience was so transformational for me in so many ways from my relationship with food, goal setting, adaptability, and mental toughness, I pursued and earned my Ironman Coaching Certification to help others get across that finish line!
I am so proud to announce I am now an official Ironman Certified Coach! I love all three disciplines and my specialty is endurance running. I may not be the right coach to get you to World Championships but I will get you results you will be proud of and teach you how to enjoy running with fewer injuries along the way!
In addition to being a Certified Ironman Coach, I am also certified as a National Academy of Sprots Medicine (NASM) Certified Nutrition Coach, Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) Certified Indoor Cyclist Instructor and Virtual Coaching Specialist.
I am a seasoned runner on pace for 1,900+ miles in 2021 alone.
My personal bests within the last three years include:
Half Marathon: 1:53
10 Miler: 1:25:26
Thank you for your consideration!
