My older son was born with Asperger's Syndrome, which used to be a term for milder Autism. This led us to invest numerous hours addressing his sensory challenges. To help him, we frequently spent time around horses and farm animals, especially goats. In the beginning, the goats overwhelmed him, leading to meltdowns. Surprisingly, we persisted. One day, as he was munching on Pirate Booty, a goat hopped onto the table and began nibbling his snack. Unusually, he didn't react negatively – he just kept eating. Origins of "scapegoat"
The word was coined by a Protestant scholar, William Tyndale, in 1530, when he undertook the task of the first translation of the entire Hebrew Bible into English. He found he needed to introduce some new words into the English language in order to make sense of Hebrew, as he understood it. And where the Torah describes Yom Kippur, he met with a problem.
A key part of Yom Kippur, as described in the Torah, is the ritual slaughter of two goats; one for the Lord, and the other is designated “for Azazel”. Jewish tradition takes “Azazel” as the name of a rocky headland off which one goat, having the sins of the community symbolically placed upon it, would be thrown. The other goat, the one for the Lord, would be slaughtered as part of the general Yom Kippur rituals. This slaughter would bring atonement to the community.

A breed of goat limited for decades by law in Israel is expected to prosper once again in the Jewish state. The black goat, also called the Syrian goat, has since 1950 been barred from forests and woodlands under a law that says they cause environmental damage.However ,recent studies have shown that these goats can help reduce the risk of fire by eating flammable bushes and shrubs.
And just north of Albuquerque on the Sandia Pueblo, the bleating of over 70 Boer and Spanish goats pierced the tranquility of the bosque forest, a gallery of towering cottonwoods and willows on the eastern bank of the Rio Grande that’s long been prized for its biodiversity. Under the shade of the native trees, the animals eagerly licked and chewed the bark and branches of knee-high invasive plants like young Siberian, or dwarf, elms and bright green tamarisk, or saltcedar. The brown-and-white foragers, which are owned by Max Wade, a rancher in the neighboring town of Rio Rancho, were there to devour these non-native species, which cover the forest floor in flammable fuels.
